Plant-based pyrethrum is extracted from the African chrysanthemum (chrysanthemum cinerariifolium) and is European certified. It’s one of the oldest known insect repelling substances. Synthetic copies of pyrethrum have been available since the sixties and remain effective for a longer period of time, though this is not as much of an advantage as it may sound: because synthetic variants of pyrethrum break down less quickly, they’re harmful to both humans and the environment.
